Purchasing a winter cover is a substantial investment, so it can be tempting to stick the with seemingly lower cost of shrink wrap year after year. But is the shrink wrap really saving you money? Not in the long run! A quality sailboat winter cover should last you at least ten years. There are a few key points to keep in mind when you're deciding what kind of cover will suit your needs, and which company you should use for manufacturing it.
The materials. The materials used should only be the most durable available. Top Gun is a popular fabric for winter covers because it's heavy duty and waterproof. Zippers are preferable over Velcro, because Velcro gets sun-damaged and loses its effect after only a few years. Same goes for thread; opting for a UV-resistant thread like Tenara rather than cheap polyester will keep the cover from falling apart at the seams. Grommets are what hold the tie lines, so using a professional grommet press rather than hand tools is essential. This provides grommet strength and consistency throughout your cover. Nor'easter Winter Covers are manufactured using Top Gun material, Tenara Thread, heavy duty marine-grade zippers, and every grommet is installed by a pneumatic grommet press.
Custom fit. You want your cover to fit your boat properly. Sounds simple, right? But many companies don't even come to your boat before manufacturing a cover. It doesn't matter if you have a common make & model, there are subtle differences on every boat. Stanchions, shrouds, radar poles...if anything is a few inches out of place, your cover isn't going to fit. Every single Nor'easter Winter Cover is measured and patterned, in person, by one of our trained staff. We will never use a picture or similar specs to guess or assume measurements.
No frame needed! The Nor'easter Winter Cover uses your boom for support in lieu of a frame, so you won't have to deal with a complicated frame system that's time-consuming and labor-intensive to install every year. If you take the mast down for the winter, we can construct a simple frame that simulates the boom. So consider how much time you would like to spend installing your cover each year. Our frameless cover system will take about one hour to install.

Our Philosophy:
The North Shore Canvas approach to custom covers is simple: custom means custom. It means each and every boat must be assessed and measured with precision. Indeed, as any experienced boat owner knows, no two boats are identical. We pride ourselves on our attention to detail and ensure that every radar pole, davit, stanchion, and any other modification is accounted for and appropriately accommodated by our covers. We travel to you, near or far, and absorb the cost of measuring each and every boat to ensure the proper fit. Our more than 10 years of experience and our production of hundreds of custom covers nationwide speak for themselves. Now there are some canvas stores out there who purport to produce “custom covers” but rely instead on prior patterns generated for other boats. Don’t be fooled by this. There is nothing “custom” about having your boat’s cover derived from another boat’s pattern. At North Shore Canvas, our customers can rest-assured that no detail, no matter how small, will be overlooked. We trust our customers’ boats are important to them, whether it be for business or recreation. Our customers can trust North Shore Canvas to keep those boats dry and protected.

So skip the wasteful shrink wrap, don't compromise on quality, and invest in a
